Exercise your brain Juan Camilo Gallego c.gallego@comunicaciones.udea.net.co Brain aerobics can help improve brain function and prevent late-life cognitive impairment. Psychologist Gustavo Perez explains the benefits of brain aerobics Brain training is necessary to keep our brain up and running smoothly as well as physical exercise helps to maintain muscle tone. Brain aerobics are designed to boost your brain’s vitality at any age. Neurobics is a little known technique that enhances the brain performance and helps neurons stay healthy. These exercises aim at strengthening specific brain functions such as memory, perception, concentration and attention. Psychologist Gustavo Perez, former dean of the Department of Psychology at the University of San Buenaventura says “it has been demonstrated that neurobics, which are part of Neuroscience, help people improve their cognitive abilities”. Neurobics According to Perez, brain reaches its peak development and efficiency around age 30 while neuron activity remains stable until age 50. Thereafter, the brain will begin to gradually undergo both mild and moderate to severe cognitive impairment. However, neurobic exercises can help prevent brain deterioration and strengthen executive function abilities. We all exercise our brain by memorizing things or playing memory games. People over the age of 40 are more likely to participate in neurobics “as they feel the need to be mentally active”, he said. Neurobics may also help improve the quality of life for older people with cognitive disorders such as amnesia and dementia. The brain is one of the most sensitive organs in our body, therefore, like any other muscle-building exercise, mental exercise is important to help the brain stay healthy. Where and when Neurobic exercises are held once a week in sessions lasting three to four hours to allow participants to implement what they have learned. If you are in Medellín, Academia Yurupary and Coomeva offer courses ranging from 12 hr seminars, 24 hr seminars to 40-hour seminars. Also websites such as www.clubneurologia.tv and www.lumosity.com are highly recommended for those interested in brain exercising activities.
