The School of Engineering offers leading graduate programs

The School of Engineering at the University of Antioquia has about 65 teachers having PhD degree from national and overseas universities. This figure continues to increase as a result of University policies to promote advanced training for teachers.

Also 24 teachers of the School of Engineering are currently attending PhD programs at universities in Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Holland, Spain, United States, Brazil and Colombia, which demonstrates high academic quality of the engineering faculty.

Qualified faculty training allows strengthening the work of research groups while promoting training of new researchers. This strategy boosts research development through applied research projects that lead to the generation of new knowledge as well as developing new technologies and processes.

Natalia Gaviria, Master and PhD coordinator at the School of Engineering says that University PhD programs have on-going support regarding internationalization process. Therefore, attending a PhD program demands continuous knowledge exchange with other institutions across the world.

According to Gaviria, PhD programs affect different fields such as economics as they are a local response to the economic opening and related implications. It also affects science and technology, since generating new knowledge strengthens scientific and technological development as well.

Julio Cesar Saldarriaga, vice dean of the School of Engineering says that an engineer with a PhD has the benefit of being trained in a specific field of knowledge. Postgraduate training allows professionals developing engineering solutions. It also gives them the opportunity to take part in major engineering projects not only at national but international level.

"When a professional acquires knowledge in other institutions in the world training becomes an important added value for future research" claims Professor Saldarriaga, who just finished PhD studies.

Graduate programs
36 research groups support the graduate programs at the School of Engineering. Currently the School of Engineering delivers different programs according to the needs of the environment as well as those related to world's new political and economical order.

"Having a PhD means having a broader global view. It also allows you to deepen knowledge into a specific research area. This provides professionals with the ability to research and solve problems in today's world. Therefore, the School of Engineering is committed to give support to faculty training" stresses engineer Natalia Gaviria.

The School of Engineering, University of Antioquia, offers different graduate programs including:
PhD in Engineering
PhD in Electrical Engineering
PhD in Chemical Engineering (available in English)
PhD in Environmental Engineering
PhD in Materials Engineering
