Universidad de Antioquia ranked among world’s best in latest THE rankings

Universidad de Antioquia ranks among the world’s best universities in latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE). Colombia’s Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and Universidad de Los Andes also rank among the world’s best 980 universities.

Universidad de Antioquia also ranks 15th among Latin America's top univerities according to Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings 2016

UdeA has ranked somewhere between 800 and 900th, said UdeA rector Mauricio Alviar.  Published by British magazine Times Higher Education, the World University Rankings is one of the world's most influential publications of its type.

Mr. Alviar says being ranking among the world’s top universities is a great accolade for Universidad de Antioquia, a recognition to the university's long-standing commitment to conducting quality research and its highly-respected reputation in the health sciences field. “This is an exciting challenge that encourages us to strive to further strengthen the university’s reputation as a world-class university,” he said.

For the first time in the 12-year history of the list, the ranking of the best universities in the world is led by a British university. University of Oxford ranks first in the list dethroning the California Institute of Technology (CalTech).

Once again Stanford ranks third in the list, followed by University of Cambridge (4), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT (5), and Harvard University (6).

Oxford’s success can be attributed to improved performances across the four main indicators underlying the methodology of the ranking – teaching, research, citations and international outlook. More specifically the institution’s total income and research income is rising faster than its staff numbers, its research is more influential, and it has been more successful at drawing in international talent, the report says.

"Lack of investment has pushed Latin American universities down the international rankings," the editor of the World University Rankings Phil Baty said. And he added “there is still much to do in order to improve the participation of the region's universities and further strengthen the quality and relevance of higher education in Latin America.”

Mexico and Chile have substantially increased their presence in the Latin America list, while Brazil continues to dominate the ranking with three universities included in the list. Also, this year’s ranking includes four Chilean universities (for a total of ten), and five from Mexico (for a total of seven universities).

For the first time, institutions from Venezuela and Costa Rica feature in the list. Brazil’s University of Sao Paulo continues to dominate the list and ranks first in Latin America.
