The University is governed by several ruling boards that include: the Board of Trustees, the Academic Council, the Rector, the Deans and Vice deans, the Directors of the academic departments, as well as other committees and authorities.

The Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees, often referred to as Board of Governors, is the highest governing and management body of the University and is responsible for the government, control, conduct, management, and administration of the University. It is composed of several voting members including:

  • The Governor of the Department of Antioquia, who acts as the chairman of the Board
  • The Minister of Education or his/her representative
  • An official representative of the President of Colombia
  • A dean appointed by the Academic Council
  • A faculty representative
  • A student representative
  • An alumni representative
  • A representative of the manufacturing sector
  • A former University rector
  • The Rector, an ex officio nonvoting member
  • The Executive Vice president and provost

The Academic Council

As its name indicates, the Academic Council is the University’s highest academic authority. It comprises the Rector, the Vice chancellors for research, teaching, extension and administration, the deans of the various schools, and representatives of the faculty and students.

The primary function of the Academic Council is to approve and evaluate research and extension activities and the plans of study. It is also responsible for setting the academic standards that should be met by both faculty and students, as well as defining administrative guidelines and setting the University's admission policies and requirements.

The Rector

Also called the President, the Rector is the chief executive officer of the University and also serves as its key spokesperson. The rector also is charged with the responsibility of managing the University and all its departments, including the operation and administration of the University’s academic activities. The Rector is responsible for leading the University to accomplish its educational missions and goals. His office is incompatible with other public and private elected or appointed positions.
