Culture

UdeA’s Cultural Network comprises the various university units responsible for carrying out cultural and community-based programs designed to help strengthen the University’s cultural mission.  

Cultural settings

Universidad de Antioquia boasts several cultural settings including:

University Library System

The University Library System consists of several libraries and information centers that provide access to a wide range of library resources and services. It includes the central library together with eight satellite libraries. It houses approximately 700,000 publications including books, magazines, brochures and multimedia resources as well as a number of original documents, first editions, archives and records.

It also provides training and support to students from peer institutions and blind or visually impaired people.  About 9,000 users visit the university libraries every day.

University theatre

The Camilo Torres Restrepo University theatre has a seating capacity of 1,252, which makes it a sought-after venue for cultural and academic events. This iconic facility has become a cultural reference point both locally and nationally.

Additionally, the University has other cultural settings including the auditorium or Paraninfo, the open-air theatre and the Luis Alberto Alvarez theatre, among other facilities.

University museum

UdeA museum houses five heritage collections including:

Anthropology: this collection comprises about 19,200 pieces including the nation’s largest collection of pre-Columbian ceramics.

Visual arts: it includes more than 2,500 works by national and international artists.

Natural sciences: this collection exhibits 23,868 pieces including animals, wildlife, minerals and rocks native to Colombia.

History: this collection consists of 1,250 elements used during various stages in the history of the University.

Human anatomy: this collection is composed of 250 pieces.

The Galileo Hall:  it includes 208 pieces and assembles related to physics, chemistry and mathematics. 

The Museum offers guided tours as well as temporary and traveling exhibits, courses, workshops and consulting services.

Symphonic band

The University symphonic band has been active for more than 50 years and is one of the department’s oldest symphonic bands. The band offers retreats and concerts in different public and cultural settings across the city and other regions of the department. Universidad de Antioquia has also a number of bands and musical groups such as the Big Band, the School of Medicine Band, The Student Singing Club and the estudiantina.
