Facilities and campuses

Get to know all the facilities and campuses of Universidad de Antioquia, which include the main campus in Medellín and the Graduate Programs Headquarters.

Medellín

The Colombian Ministry of Culture, through its Heritage Office, declared the main campus of Universidad de Antioquia and the architectural ensemble of the San Ignacio plaza—where the University Auditorium is located—as a Bien de Interés Cultural de la nación (national Good of Cultural Interest).

Main campus

It is located in the city of Medellín, between Calle 67 (Barranquilla) and Carrera 55 (Avenida del Ferrocarril). Its construction finished in 1966, with a total area of 287,467 m2 and a built-up area of 133,942  m2. It has pedestrian areas as well as green and open spaces. Besides the classroom blocks, laboratories, and administrative offices, the main campus hosts the Universidad de Antioquia University Museum, the Camilo Torres Restrepo University Theater, the Carlos Gaviria Díaz Central Library, and an extensive sports complex. It has a constant art relationship with the works of well-known national plastic artists such as Francisco Antonio Cano, Jorge Cárdenas Hernández, Rodrigo Arenas Betancur, Salvador Arango, Enrique Grau, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, Alonso Ríos, Eladio Vélez, and Marta Lucía Villafañe.

It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural de la nación (national Good of Cultural Interest) on July 26, 2013, and it is the only campus of the country with this Colombian heritage category.

Graduate Programs Headquarters

The Graduate Programs Headquarters of Universidad de Antioquia was opened on August 19, 2010, with the main objective of continuing making the teaching core purpose possible. The headquarters offer graduate programs that, besides complying with a social commitment, respond to internal demands of the scientists’ and experts’ community, expecting to make contributions to the actual social transformations. In addition, outreach activities take place in this facility.

It has 20 classrooms, eight meeting rooms, three videoconference rooms, one financial laboratory, parking spaces for cars and motorbikes, cafeteria, and photocopy service.

Financial laboratory

The financial laboratory is a space designed for students, professors, and the community in general. In this place they can learn, in a practical way, how financial markets work in Colombia and the world and they can generate new knowledge as well as research, outreach, and teaching projects in the field of finance.

The laboratory will offer courses for all audiences. Finance for everyone is one of them, with which people can learn about rules of three, types of interest, financial markets, and, finally, when students understand those basic concepts, the course will address topics of stock exchange and the multiple transactions everyone can do, such as the purchase of shares, for instance.

Former Faculty of Law building

During the 19th century, the 1900s, and the 1910s, the School of Law received extensive national recognition thanks, mainly, to the academic excellence of its professors and alumni. However, only in 1925—when the Faculty of Medicine building was also being built and the San Ignacio building was being revamped—the School of Law was provided with an appropriate building to conduct its academic and outreach work. The new building, designed by the Belgian architect Agustin Goovaerts, had such a great impact that the city of Medellín celebrated with it the 250th anniversary of foundation of Villa de la Candelaria de Medellín.

The School of Law—before its relocation to the university’s main campus—had its premises in that building until the 1960s. Afterwards, it served as a high school institution for several years. Then, the university took over the building again, and in 2007, because of its advanced physical deterioration, the Medellín Mayor’s Office invested 7 billion Colombian pesos in its restauration. Nowadays, it serves as premises for different outreach projects of the university; and, in the future, it will host the Language Center of the university and Instituto Confucio, a Mandarin Chinese institute.

San Ignacio - Auditorium building

University Auditorium

May 30, 1997, became another significant date for the history of Universidad de Antioquia and for Antioquia’s and Colombia’s culture because, after an intense period of around 10 years, the Colombian Government (through the National Institute of Roads, Department of National Monuments), the Antioquia Government, and the university delivered to the citizens the restauration works of the San Ignacio building, one of the most valuable heritage icons for the people from Antioquia and one of the architectural gems that Medellín has been always proud to exhibit.

National monument

Declared national monument on March 12, 1982, the San Ignacio building is a living testimony of a community that, through architecture, expressed its needs of education, culture, and liberty.

The origin of the building goes back to 1793 when the Medellín town council purchased the land in the then San Lorenzo neighborhood (today San Ignacio sector) and started raising funds to build an architectural ensemble made up of a church, a monastery, and a school.

In 1803, when Universidad de Antioquia was established, the Spanish priest friar Rafael de la Serna, first rector of the alma mater, was commissioned to coordinate the construction works of such ensemble.

In 1886, after a period of difficulties caused by the social and political situation of Colombia, the San Ignacio building was named Universidad de Antioquia, and it embraced in its classrooms the students from the School of Arts and Trades and the Faculty of Mines.

It is located downtown Medellín between Calle 48 (Pichincha) and Calle 49 (Ayacucho).

University Research Headquarters

The University Research Headquarters (abbreviated SIU in Spanish) has a total area of 34,500 m2. Intense activities of basic and applied research, productive and solidary outreach, and research-oriented teaching are conducted at SIU. A wide and multidisciplinary scientific community works there, including, especially, young undergraduate and graduate researchers.

Northeastern region

Universidad de Antioquia has two facilities in Northeastern Antioquia: the Amalfi Facility, in the municipality of Amalfi, and the Segovia-Remedios Mining District Facility, in the municipality of Segovia.

Segovia-Remedios Mining District facility

The opening of this Universidad de Antioquia facility took place on July 29, 2005. It is located in the municipality of Segovia in Northeastern Antioquia. Due to the geographical and strategical difficulties of desingating only one municipality as headquarters of the university in this region, it was agreed, in 2004, to develop outreach programs and programs to improve the quality of primary and secondary education and to offer relevant undergraduate programs in the municipalities of Amalfi, Segovia, and Yolombó. Nowadays, in-person and online undergraduate programs are offered in this facility.

Amalfi facility

It was opened on May 31, 2005, thanks to a framework agreement between Universidad de Antioquia and the Amalfi Mayor’s Office. The facility first started with the Three-Year Associate Degree in Business Management. Currently, it has 226 graduates from associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. Additionally, in agreement with the Colombian National Service of Learning (abbreviated SENA in Spanish), 93 people have graduated from the Two-Year Associate Degree in Agriculture.

Northern region

On January 26, 2006, an educational project that seeks to impact Northern Antioquia was introduced. The seed germinates in the municipality of Yarumal and is expected to blossom in the 17 municipalities that make up this region of Antioquia.

The Northern facility is an operating institution of the CERES (Spanish acronym for Higher Education Regional Centers) Alliance, a strategy of the Ministry of National Education to extend quality educational coverage to disadvantaged populations. In this sense, primary and secondary education is improved, so that they have more opportunities to access quality and equitable public higher education and remain in the programs of their choice.

The transformation that Universidad de Antioquia has generated in the cultural, political, social, and academic aspects of the municipality and the region in general is very clear. In the short period of time that it has been operating, this campus has become the reference point of many different activities and projects undertaken and in progress in the municipality, such as: Working Group for Education, Culture Council, Regional Committee of Competitiveness, Municipal Development Hubs, Life Plan and Career Guidance, Educational Park, Working Group of Women Issues for Gender Equity, and Santa Fe de Antioquia Film Festival Corporation.
