Governance structure

Learn here about the governing bodies of Universidad de Antioquia, which are the board of trustees, the university senate, and the rector's office committee.

Board of Trustees

It consists of:

  • The Governor of the department of Antioquia, who is the Chairman.

  • The Minister of National Education or his/her delegate. 

  • A representative—with experience in the university sector—of the President of the Republic.

  • A dean, representing academic directors, appointed by the University Senate for two years.

  • A representative of professors, elected by professors under exclusive contract, full-time professors, and half-time professors through universal, direct, and secret suffrage for two years.

  • A representative of students, elected by them through universal, direct, and secret suffrage for two years.

  • A graduate of the university—not employed by the institution—elected by the alumni representatives before faculty boards for two years.

  • A representative—who had been involved in the higher education sector—of Antioquia’s corporate sector, elected by the Chairman, among the candidates nominated by the business community of Antioquia, for two years.

  • A former rector of the university who had held the position properly, elected by the former rectors for two years.

  • The Rector, with the right to speak but not to vote.

  • The General Secretary in his/her capacity as secretary of the Board.

The duties of the Board of Trustees include: to define the administrative policies and organizational structure of the university, to ensure that the work of the institution is in line with the constitutional and legal provisions, to implement the development plan of the university and evaluate it regularly, and to approve or modify plans and projects in accordance with the mission and vision of the university, ensuring a quality public education, and favoring the training of professionals that, with their excellence, contribute to progress and social development.

This Board meets every last Tuesday of each month, with special meetings scheduled as necessary.

University Senate

It consists of the Rector, who is the Chairman, the vice rectors for research, teaching, and outreach, the administrative vice rector, the faculty deans, and the representatives of professors and students.

The main function of the University Senate is to lead the progress of the academic processes in the university by approving the research, outreach, and study programs and evaluating them regularly. Other functions include defining the academic conditions of professors and students, outlining general guidelines for the administrative staff, and establishing admission policies and conditions for the undergraduate and graduate programs, among others.

This Senate meets every two weeks, with special meetings scheduled as necessary.

John Jairo Arboleda Céspedes 
Rector of Universidad de Antioquia since April, 2018

He holds a master’s degree in Tropical Medicine from the Corporation of Basic Biomedical Sciences from Universidad de Antioquia and a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from the same university.

He has been professor and held the following positions at Universidad de Antioquia: dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (2017), interim rector several times (2010-2015), general vice rector (2012-2015), vice rector of research (2009), vice rector of outreach (2012), director of regionalization (2003-2012), director of university wellbeing (2012), head of the Research Center of Agricultural Sciences (2001-2003 and 2015-2017), and president of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Association (Aseagrarias) (2015-2017).

Additionally, he was an international researcher at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) of the United States Department of Agriculture in New York (1998-2000); was part and led the Centauro research group, the first A-classified group in the School of Veterinary Medicine of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of Universidad de Antioquia (2002); and was an associate researcher of the Immunovirology research group at the Faculty of Medicine of the same university (1996-2000).

His main achievements during his career at Universidad de Antioquia include the academic and administrative transformation of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics into the Faculty of Agricultural Sciencesand the promotion of the university regionalization, by establishing facilities in the nine regions of the department of Antioquia, which now has over 50 academic programs and over 8,000 graduates. This regionalization program has been recognized three times by the Ministry of National Education as the best higher education regionalization strategy of Colombia.
