The donation of 13 tons of medical supplies, made by  the Government of the United Arab Emirates through Moncada Holding to the University of Antioquia, arrived in Bogotá on the morning of this Wednesday, April 8th, 2020, in order to support the work being carried out by the Alma Mater in its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

An Etihad Airways flight was in charge of bringing to Colombia, among other items, 15,000 protective coveralls, 15,000 scrub suits, 500,000 gloves, 30,000 shoe covers, and 20,000 masks, as well as disinfectants, which will be used by health staff working in hospitals and laboratories in Antioquia.

The donation also included five ventilators, 10,000 rapid tests for the detection of Covid-19, 2,400 Nucleic Acid Extraction Kits, 7 Automated  RNA Extraction Workstations, and three thermocyclers.

"This will allow us to have enough resources for the protection of the health workers who are attending to the Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, the diagnosis and molecular technology equipment will allow us to place our country, our department, our city, and our university in the right position towards that massive diagnosis that will be  needed in the forthcoming weeks in order to identify infected people, as well as to take the necessary measures, from an epidemiological point of view, to avoid contact and further virus transmission," said the rector of Universidad de Antioquia, John Jairo Arboleda Céspedes, on receiving the above-mentioned supplies.

The Etihad Airways Boeing 777 bringing the UAE Government's donation arrived at El Dorado airport in Bogotá, on Wednesday, April 8.

The Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates in Colombia, Salem Rashid Alouis, stated that, "in accordance with the instruction given by  the Government of the United Arab Emirates, medical and preventive supplies have arrived in the Republic of Colombia with the aim of facing Covid-19 and limiting its spread inside and outside the country.” Additionally, “the arrival of the first airlift with medical and preventive assistance supplies undoubtedly reflects the UAE's commitment to the support of the Colombian people in  a crisis that is being experienced by the entire world, and its emphasis on supporting all collective actions to face the virus and its effects," Mr. Rashid Alouis said.

The rapprochement between Universidad de Antioquia and the Government of the United Arab Emirates began in November 2019 through the mediation of Moncada Holding, whose CEO, Carlos Mario Gallego, made it possible for Universidad de Antioquia to establish contact with the first artificial intelligence university in that country, and, as a result, a framework agreement for scientific and academic cooperation was signed on March 25th, 2020,  of which  this donation is the first result.

“The kind of technology that has been shared by the UAE does not exist in Latin America yet, and it is needed in order to strengthen our diagnostic capacity,” said Carlos Mario Gallego, from Moncada Holding.
