Nobel Peace Prize revives peace hope in Colombia

Universidad de Antioquia celebrates with great enthusiasm the awarding of the 2016 Nobel Prize to the president of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos for his efforts to negotiate peace with the FARC guerrillas.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, left of centre, and FARC leader Rodrigo Londono shake hands during the signing of a peace agreement between the Colombian government and the Marxist guerrillas in Cartagena, Colombia, on Sept. 26.

The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos is the second Nobel that Colombia has won in its history, following Gabriel García Márquez, who won the prize for literature in 1982. The Nobel revives hopes of Colombia's peace process with FARC after 52 years of internal armed conflict.

In its statement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee highlighted “President Santos’ resolute efforts to bring the country's more than 50-year-long civil war to an end, a war that has cost the lives of at least 220,000 Colombians and displaced close to six million people”.

The award is also a tribute to the victims of an armed conflict which seemed endless. This historic moment poses huge challenges for the country as well as all social and institutional sectors in order to advance peacebuilding.

Universidad de Antioquia will continue to make efforts towards peacebuilding and help create a more just and equitable society in order to face the challenges of today’s world.
