Five Colombian universities are ranked within the top 50 in Latin America, the latest QS University Rankings says.

“What can not be measured can not be improved,” management experts say. This phrase might come in handy when it comes to higher education because universities that measure their academic progress are more likely to achieve continuous improvement.

So is the case with five Colombian universities that climbed places this year in the QS LatAm University Rankings. The QS University Rankings is published by Quacquarelli Symonds, a British firm that measures the performance of universities worldwide.

Published annually since 2011, the QS University Rankings: Latin America highlights the 300 top universities in Latin America.

With 10 universities ranked among the top 100, and 41 among the best 300 universities in Latin America, Colombia is the third country in the region with the largest number of universities positioned in the 2016 QS University Rankings.

This year Colombia claims five universities ranked within the top 50 Latin American universities: Universidad de los Andes (8), Universidad Nacional (10), Universidad de Antioquia (22), Universidad Javeriana (28), and Universidad del Valle (48).

Pablo Navas, rector of Universidad de los Andes, says it is a source of pride for the university that it is ranked among the best universities in Latin America and share honors with Universidad Nacional, Colombia’s largest public university.

Universidad del Valle's rector Edgar Varela has also reason to celebrate because this institution climbed 13 places in the LatAm University Rankings. He said this public university continues to excel due to the high quality of its academic programs and inclusion policies. Universidad del Valle currently has 24,000 students and nine regional campuses.

Father Luis Castellanos, rector of Universidad Javeriana, explains that while it is not important for the university to be included in the rankings, it is certainly a source of pride to this institution to be ranked among the top 50.

The QS University Rankings calculates a university’s overall score based on indicators such as academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, research activity, and the number of citations in academic publications, among others.

The QS University Rankings reveals strong progress for Colombian universities in terms of quality, research and excellence.
