UdeA chosen as a 'university for peace'

After 52 years of fighting and almost four years of peace negotiations, the Colombian Government and the Marxist guerrillas of the so-called Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have agreed to a bilateral and definitive ceasefire.

60 regional students will benefit from undergraduate programs at UdeA's regional campus located in the town of Carmen de Viboral, Eastern Antioquia

Universidad de Antioquia has been chosen as one of the public universities that will be part of the Universities for Peace program, an initiative by the Colombian Government aimed at providing access to higher education to young people in rural and urban areas of the country affected by the armed conflict.

In this context, UdeA will offer undergraduate programs in urban engineering, environmental engineering and civil engineering. Places will be allocated in descending order among those who pass the entrance exam and live in areas other than Medellín. Classes begin in the second half of 2016.

During the first two years, students will attend classes in their hometowns. After this time, students are required to attend classes at the main campus of the university in which they enrolled. Students enrolled at Universidad de Antioquia can choose to attend classes either at UdeA’s East Campus facilities or at the main campus in Medellín.

“UdeA's regional East Campus was selected to provide undergraduate training to students from Eastern Antioquia, Colombia, which is an area that has been historically struck by violence. Therefore, UdeA wants to give first priority to students from that region. Additionally, the School of Engineering has a variety of programs specifically designed to meet the educational needs of the locals,” UdeA Rector Mauricio Alviar said.

It is expected that 1000 young people will benefit from the first phase of the Universities for Peace Program. Applicants can register online via the website of the Ministry of National Education. Admitted applicants will receive one full year of scholarship. Applicants must commit to completing their degree in order to be eligible for admission.

Since 2015 Universidad de Antioquia has worked closely with Red de Territorios por la Paz, an initiative led by the Government of Colombia which seeks to encourage the participation of young people in peacebuilding and reconciliation programs. UdeA has also been actively engaged in activities aimed to better understand an eventual post-conflict scenario.

UdeA’s regional academic programs are designed to suit the needs of vulnerable populations and those demobilized from illegal armed groups as a result of peace accords.

According to the Ministry of National Education 17,500 million pesos (about US$6 million) will be invested in tuition fees and student allowances.
