Program overview

The Department of Psychoanalysis at Universidad de Antioquia offers a Psychoanalytic Training Program leading to the Doctor of Psychoanalysis degree. The program provides in-depth education in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis based on a spirit of scientific inquiry and respect for the humanistic concerns advocated by the UdeA School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Program objectives

UdeA's Psychoanalytic Training Program aims to train skilled practitioners who are proficient in practicing, teaching, and applying psychoanalytic knowledge and skills to the broad spectrum of human knowledge and experience.

Program of study

The curriculum consists of three years (six semesters) of academic coursework covering the theory and technique of psychoanalysis, and combines classroom instruction and seminars. Students must complete a doctoral dissertation in order to obtain the PhD.

Areas of concentration

The program offers four areas of concentration providing an opportunity for students to pursue in depth an area of personal interest during the 3-year training. Students can choose from the following areas of concentration:

  • Problems of contemporary civilization
  • Clinical psychoanalysis
  • Adolescent psychology
  • Psychoanalysis, philosophy and epistemology

Coursework

The program is delivered entirely on-site and requires full-time attendance so that students can participate in all scheduled activities. The first three semesters are devoted to concentrated study of fundamental courses during which students must attend 12 hours of class per week. During the 4th and 5th semesters candidates must attend 8 hours of classwork per week, and 4 hours of classwork per week during the the last semester. Candidates are also required to conduct independent study under the supervision of a faculty member.
