Universidad de Antioquia ranked No. 15 among Latin America’s top universities says the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, a British publication that provides the definitive list of the world's best universities.

The top universities rankings employ 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available. The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research), and industry income (knowledge transfer).

With an overall score of 67,2/100 Universidad de los Andes ranked no. 10 on the list, the highest position occupied by a Colombian university. According to the list, the strength of Universidad de Antioquia lies in the quality of its research, a category in which the university obtained a score of 74,2. UdeA’s overall score was 57,6/100.

Other Colombian universities ranked on the list are Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (ranked No. 41) tied with Universidad del Norte.  

The ranking is dominated by Brazilian public universities, including Universidade de São Paulo (No. 1) and Universidade Estadual de Campinas (No. 2).  

According to Carolina Guzman-Valenzuela, a researcher at the Center for Advanced Research at Universidad de Chile, the impressive performance of Brazilian higher education is due in part because Brazilian universities are among the most prolific international patent filers worldwide, in addition to the State funding for research in public universities, which accounts for 1.15% of Brazil’s GDP.
