Full scholarships for Master in Epidemiology financed by the TDR/WHO Program

  • Applicants must be nationals and residents from low- and middle income countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.  
  • There are 16 full scholarships, with a maximum quota of three (3) Colombians.
  • Fellows will receive a monthly stipend to coverthe costs of maintenance during the four (4) semesters of the Master; economyairfare tickets; tuition fees, compulsory medical insurance, as well as resources to support research activities and for the acquisition of educational materials.
  • The Master will have an emphasis on the study of implementation research on infectious diseases of poverty.
  • Deadline for the application submission is 30th October, 2015.

Universidad de Antioquia, in Medellin, Colombia, has open a call for proposals to select the 16 participants who will take part in a special cohort of Master's Degree in Epidemiology, funded by the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR). The Master's degree is offered by the National School of Public Health and the deadline for applications will be October 30 of this year.

Financed with resources from the WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program - UNDP-, the TDR seeks to strengthen the research and implementation of public health strategies aimed at combating infectious diseases of poverty in the region, under the approach called implementation research, dedicated to the identification of bottlenecks in health systems and the mechanisms for resolving these problems.

The University was chosen by the TDR as one of the seven world operators of the training program, a condition which allows the National School of Public Health to offer full scholarships for Master's degree for studies in Epidemiology during the period 2016-2018.

The National School of Public Health at Universidad de Antioquia is located at Medellin, a city of approximately 3 million inhabitants, located in the northwestern area of the country, which was elected in 2013 by the Wall Street Journal and the Urban Land Institute as the most innovative city of the world.

Application requirements

Nationals residing in the low and middle-income countries in Latin America and the Caribbean may apply, with a maximum age of 35 years. Only three Colombian nationals may be selected under this call.

After having been notified of the scholarship, applicants will have 7 calendar days to confirm the acceptance of it, time after which it will be assumed that the candidate renounces to the program of studies. The Master's Degree in Epidemiology at the National School of Public Health lasts two years. The courses will be taught in Spanish.

Scholarship components

The fellowship of the TDR Program/WHO includes a monthly stipend to cover living expenses equivalent to local living cost in Medellin, during a period of four semesters;round trip economy airfare between the home country of the student and Medellin, Colombia; tuition fees and a basic medical and accident insurance; allowance toward recommended learning materials (e.g. text-books, laptop); support for research project/thesis expenses, including travel and sustenance during data collection in home country.

  • Copy of identification document (passport for foreign applicants or identity card for Colombians)
  • Professional degree issued by an officially recognized higher education institution.
  • Official transcripts of undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Applicant’s Curriculum Vitae
  • Accreditation of professional or research experience
  • Accreditation of reading proficiency in English
  • Research proposal*

*In the research proposal, it must be presented in a brief way the research that the candidate proposes to carry out during the master's degree. It must have a maximum length of 1500 words, font Arial 12. The research proposal must state the country, infectious disease and the problem that is proposed to study. There will only be accepted research proposals that have as objective, the study of the barriers to the implementation of interventions in infectious diseases of poverty.
