Colombia’s higher education system among the best in the world

The QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings highlights the nations with the world’s strongest higher education systems. Comparing national performance in four areas, the ranking is based on system strength, access, flagship institution performance, and economic context.

The QS World University Rankings 2016 places Universidad de Antioquia No. 27 in Latin America.

According to the 2016 edition of the QS World University Rankings, Colombia’s higher education system ranks 34 in the world.

The QS Rankings compares the performance of higher education systems around the world based on criteria such as system strength, access, institution performance, and economic context.

Colombia performed well in the economic context category, which assesses the impact of national investment in higher education. Colombia ranks at 19th place in the world and third in the Latin American ranking within this category.

Colombia ranks 36th in the system strength category, which assesses overall national system strength, and ranks 33 in the access category, which addresses the chances of gaining a place at a world-class university for residents of the country in question. Colombia ranks 4th in Latin America, overtaking Mexico which ranks 35.

On the other hand, the ‘flagship’ category assesses the performance of the country’s leading institution within the global rankings based on the place each nation’s top university occupies in the QS World University Rankings. Colombia ranks 39 in the world within this category.

The QS World University Rankings 2016 places Universidad de los Andes and Universidad Nacional de Colombia number 7 and 13 in Latin America, respectively. The same list places Universidad de Antioquia No. 27 among Latin American universities and recognizes UdeA as one of the best 50 universities in the region.

“That’s good news, especially now that the Colombian government is committed to delivering the highest quality higher education”, said the Deputy Minister of Higher Education Natalia Ariza.

United States, UK, Germany, Australia and Canada occupy the top five places in the global ranking.
