UA medical center

IPS Universitaria, a Medellín-based health care institution operated by Universidad de Antioquia, stands out as one of the best health care institutions nationwide. The modernization and expansion of its services along with the University’s efforts to provide quality health care for both the campus and the general community resulted in IPS Universitaria being ranked among top medical facilities in Colombia.

According to a report released by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, this UdeA-run medical facility ranks first among the nation's top institutions for kidney transplantation.

With 7,462 employees and a team of professional skilled healthcare workers, IPS Universitaria is committed to bring quality health care to communities in other areas across the nation, with comprehensive services and an experienced team of healthcare providers including primary care physicians, specialists and dentists.

The institution works closely with the newly established Center for Drug Research and Development at UdeA.

80% of the 9,000 students who completed their elective rotations at IPS Universitaria in 2014 belong to UdeA School of Medicine. This is part of a collaboration agreement between both institutions to promote this healthcare center as a major clinical education site for medical students from Universidad de Antioquia.

The UdeA School of Medicine and chief executive officers of IPS Universitaria are currently working to advance a new model for health care delivery that meets the expectations of the University community.

Both Universidad de Antioquia and IPS Universitaria are part of Red Nacional de Hospitales Universitarios, a university hospitals network that is responsible for ensuring health care facilities comply with quality standards for healthcare delivery.

However, IPS Universitaria faces problems such as the crisis in Colombia’s health care system and the collection of overdue debts. To address these problems, IPS Universitaria joined Somos 14+1, a strategic alliance that brings together fourteen clinics and hospitals in Medellín and surrounding areas which aims to raise awareness about the importance of ensuring the provision of the fundamental right to health.

Despite the crisis facing the healthcare system, the institution strives to ensure it will continue to meet the needs of the community.

“Both cost reduction and an increase of 9% in operating income resulted in a significant jump in revenue last year,” said León Montaño, chief executive officer of IPS Universitaria.

The institution reported an increase in last year’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) up 86% from the year-ago period. In February 2015, the net operating surplus grew by 2,1% compared to the same period last year.

Although the healthcare legislation appears unable to meet new health care challenges, IPS Universitaria continues to strive to provide quality healthcare services to both the University community and the general public.

A pioneer in transplant of cryopreserved vascular tissue, IPS Universitaria houses a state-of-the-art GMP certified cellular therapy laboratory and biorepository.

In support of its vision, the institution strives to enhance its position as a modern, leading institution committed to the welfare of the University and the wider community.
