UdeA will offer graduate program in innovative medicine

Universidad de Antioquia is one of seven universities worldwide that will offer the International Master of Innovative Medicine, a program funded by the European Economic Community.

The Department of Basic Biomedical Sciences at Universidad de Antioquia (CCBB) will offer the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Program in Innovative Medicine which is delivered by an international consortium of seven universities in Latin America and Europe with funding from the EEC.

The innovative medicine program combines the basic clinical understanding of diseases and the use of ICT (including medical imaging and specialized technology resources) for centralized and personalized management of diseases.

This initiative included in EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) is aimed at advancing a number of preventive measures such as diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases, in order to positively impact social and economic aspects of the health of the world's population.

UdeA’s inclusion in the international consortium is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for Colombian students to participate in academic and research exchanges in universities overseas. The program awards three full-tuition scholarships per year and allows international students to pursue internships at Universidad de Antioquia.

This graduate program allows CCBB to contribute to the advancement of knowledge through collaborative research partnerships and deliver courses taught in English to foster scientific discussion.

Other universities that are members of the consortium include the University of Groningen (Netherlands), Heidelberg University (Germany), Upsala University (Sweeden), Universidad Nacional Autónoma (Mexico), Pontificia Universidad Católica (Chile) and the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil).

“The curriculum is being designed along with the partner universities in order to host the first cohort of students. It is expected that UdeA students will pursue internships in at least two partner universities in Europe,” said CCBB director Gloria Sánchez. She also noted that the University was selected to receive funding due to the expertise and excellence of CCBB’s research groups as well as the quality of its dual degree graduate program offered in partnership with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).

The program is targeted at health care professionals and those who work in the fields of marketing and business. “A way to build a healthy competition in business and lower costs associated with health care services is to have highly skilled professionals who are able to implement this type of initiatives,” Sánchez said.
