Habits, brain and dementia. Prevention is the key

In this Master Class, Professor Gloria Cardona will address the challenges and implications of conditions such as dementia and cerebrovascular disorders that affect more and more people in our society. Dementia, characterized by impaired memory, thinking and interpersonal relationships, bears a significant impact on the daily lives of individuals.  "Such alteration affects more than 26 million people worldwide." Latin Americans with dementia will increase from 7 million to 26 million in 2050 (368%), higher than the USA and Europe" (WHO 2021, ADI / BUPA 2020).

In this chapter, Professor Cardona will talk about how the brain works, how it is shaped and how our habits can deteriorate it. In addition, she will mention the issue of aging as a major risk factor for neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, the most common type of dementia. As we age, our brain becomes more susceptible to proinflammatory events associated with vascular risk factors and stroke.

As practitioners and academics, it is critical to address these challenges in a comprehensive manner. In this class, you will learn about prevention strategies, research and the adoption of healthy lifestyles to mitigate the risks associated with dementia and cerebrovascular disorders. And finally, you will learn about the importance of eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and participating in activities that involve social and emotional interaction, as well as resting adequately.

This Master Class is aimed at students and professionals interested in acquiring scientific knowledge and practical strategies to prevent and adopt healthy lifestyles in order to mitigate the risks associated with disorders that affect the brain.
