Migration procedures for foreigners and Colombians

    Posted Oct 17, 2019

In this section, you will find the basic information to make sure that you fulfill Colombian in force regulation or the regulation of the foreign country you are going to visit.

Entry to Colombia and foreigner ID card

Every foreigner interested in visiting the country for academic reasons may enter the country with an Enter and Stay Permit (PIP, by its Spanish initials) or a visa. These processes will be explained in detail in the following section.

    Entry and stay permit (PIP)

The Entry and Stay Permit is a stamp printed by the migration authorities at the arrival airport, once a foreigner arrives in the country. Students from countries (listed here) whose citizens do not require a visa to enter Colombia and that have been accepted for an academic exchange of less than six months must present their acceptance letter to Migración Colombia for the issuance of their permit. Click here for further information. If you want to know what type of PIP you need, click here.

    Visa for academic visitors

In addition to the PIP, foreigners visiting Colombia can also enter the country with a visa. This document is requested from the country of origin and its purpose is to legalize stays longer than six months. There are three types of visas for people coming from other countries. Academic activities require the V or courtesy V visa types. Click here for further information.

    Foreign ID card

Foreigners, both minors and of legal age, holding a visa for more than three months must apply for the foreign ID card at Migración Colombia office. They must request this document at the time of registration as foreigners or, at the latest within 15 calendar days starting from their entry into the country or the issuance date of the visa, if it was obtained within the Colombian territory. See requirements and procedures.

Not applying for the foreign ID card may lead to fines. The validity of the foreign ID card will be the same as that of the visa. In case you need an extension of the visa, you must also renew your foreign ID card. To do so, go to the Migración Colombia office located in Calle 19 No. 80A-40, Belen-La Nubia, Medellin. Office hours: from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    Passports and visas for Colombians

The Coordination of International Relations of the School of Medicine and the Directorate of International Relations is not responsible for processing passports and visas or handling information on procedures and requirements to obtain these documents.

Colombian faculty members, students, and researchers who want to travel to another country must process the visa by themselves. The Coordination of the School or the Directorate of International Relations will provide you with a presentation letter addressed to the relevant embassy. Click here for information about requesting for letters signed by the rector.

The Directorate of International Relations does not have any kind of agreement or contract with agencies or private companies for the accomplishment of immigration proceedings, whether for foreign visitors or members of Universidad de Antioquia.

It is recommended to consult directly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassies, Consulates, or Migración Colombia office.
