About Us

Universidad de Antioquia is a public institution of higher education founded more than 200 years ago. This institution hosts the School of Medicine, founded in 1871, when the medical practice was done under empirical precepts. During this year, 17 students were admitted in anatomy, physics, physiology, and pathology courses. Subsequently, a new conscious about medicine was created thanks to the revolutionary environment generated by the experience brought to the country by doctors who had studied and graduated in Paris. Thus, a study program and hospital structure were planned and designed, antiseptic methods were applied to surgical procedures and the Scientific Body was created in the School of Medicine, integrated today by the Medical School of Universidad de Antioquia, Hospital San Juan de Dios, and Academia de Medicina de Medellín.

Years later, during the 40s, the Surgical Technology Program was originated from the initiative of several surgeons educated abroad. This fostered the development of processes and led to the reduction in surgical times. The degree started in 1963 under the modality of “Technical Professional” in the university. However, in 1994, the degree went through modifications in order to meet the standards of a professional degree.

In 2007, the Prehospital care Technician Professional degree was created. This degree is taught in Medellin, Uraba and Bajo Cauca university dependencies.

The School of Medicine was the only school of medicine in the city for more than 100 years and is the precursor of the School of Public Health, School of Nursing and the Institutes of Microbiology and Bioanalysis, and Institute of Nutrition and Dietetics. From its walls, important and renowned leaders of the country, in fields such as the academic, scientific, social, and politics, have emerged. More than 8,500 doctors, 800 surgical technician, and 400 technician in Prehospital care have graduated during its existence, serving the population in the department and country. In such a way, the School of Medicine has returned the social and economic investment received from the Nation.

As an institution of higher education, the School of Medicine is committed to the social development of the region through the conservation, transmission, creation and application of the knowledge in the field of medicine, emphasizing in the research process, and articulated in the teaching and outreach.

The School of medicine hosts more than 3,000 members distributed as follows: 2,300 undergraduate and graduate students, 700 faculty members, and 227 administrative employees within a holding of 3.71 acres.

The School of Medicine conveys educational experience of people who express their identity in their profession. From the educational principles of this house of knowledge, the self-determination ability is intended, skill that is achieved through the exercise of reasoning processes, intellectual understanding of the world, physical care, and a dignified expression of affection and love, all with the purpose of developing psychosocial balance through reflection and conscious in several fields.

Based on the principle of integrality, it is intended to give content and intention to education and life within the School, where an educational journey starts. This journey has the power to integrate the project of life of the professionals in medicine, with an eye on the science, ethic, and politics. Integrality of being in power and action. The professional degrees are paths in the education of people that are able to meet the necessities of the society and projects of the region from their profession and with social responsibility.
